sleeping bags

The Advantages of a Down Sleeping Bag

When you are choosing a sleeping bag, one of the major things to consider is the insulation fill type. Sleeping bags are typically made with either synthetic fill or down fill. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, but a down filled sleeping bag is usually the best choice.

Down Sleeping Bags Weigh Less

The weight of your backpack and its contents is crucial when hiking the trails or even climbing a mountain. The more weight you carry, the sooner you will tire out and need a break. A down sleeping bag can make your pack a little lighter. Since a sleeping bag is one of the biggest items you will carry while hiking, this is definitely a good place to save some weight.

A Down Filled Sleeping Bag is Warmer than Synthetic Filled

Surprisingly, no synthetic fills can match down’s weight to warmth ratio. Down traps more air and acts as a better insulator than any manmade fibers. When you are camping in cold weather, a warm sleeping bag is a must. You don’t want to lose sleep shivering through the night, especially if you need energy for an early morning mountain ascent.

Down Bags Are More Compact

Pack space can be an importance factor when choosing camping gear. A down sleeping bag will compress more to take up less backpack space than a synthetic sleeping bag. That leaves you more room for things like food and extra clothes.

The Disadvantages of a Down Sleeping Bag

Although down sleeping bags have a lot of benefits, there are some drawbacks such as price and versatility.

In wet conditions down may be a poor choice. This is because a wet down bag becomes very compact, providing little insulation. This essentially leaves you with no sleeping bag for the night. To prevent this problem there are down sleeping bags made with water resistant or waterproof material. So you can still get a down bag for kayaking trips or rainy camping.

The only other real drawback is that down sleeping bags tend to be much more expensive than synthetic sleeping bags. You are usually paying for a higher quality sleeping bag when you choose down though.

Conclusion

Unless price is a big concern, down insulation is usually the best choice for sleeping bags. When you choose down, your bag weighs less, you have more room in your pack and you are warmer.

family tents
What is the best family camping tent? Experienced campers are needed!

I would like to purchase a family camping tent for my husband and kids – only problem, I don’t know ANYTHING about camping! I know I would like a 2 or 3 room tent, but I would like to be able to stand up in the side rooms. Some of the tents I have looked at it appears that you must “crawl” into the side tents. Is this a common thing? Also what do you suggest I purchase as necessities along with the tent? Sleeping bags, cots, stove? Any help is greatly appreciated, again I have never in my life camped so this is completely new to me.

What are some things that you find essential for camping? Things that you don’t leave home without???

canoe camping

Algonquin Park Canoeing Trip Tips

To properly experience the beauty of Algonquin Park you must take an interior canoe trip. There are many drive-in campgrounds in Algonquin but they are too popular during the summer months. An interior campsite is only accessible by canoe or by hiking in the late spring, summer and fall. During the winter, the interior campgrounds are accessible by cross-country skiing or by snowshoe.

Some of the best canoeing in Canada is found in Algonquin Park. There are literally hundreds of navigable rivers and lakes in the park. These waterways form a two thousand kilometer long system of interconnected canoe routes. As you get further away from the canoe access points, the park becomes much less inhabited. Depending on the route you take you may encounter only a very few number of other canoeists.

The routes in the park are not overly difficult. Some portages are quite long though, so it is best to tackle an easier route for your first trip if you are not very experienced. Park staff maintains the portages. There are two types of portages in the park. Portages that are marked in red on the map are well maintained by staff. While those that are less traveled and considerably more difficult are marked in black on the map. The portages marked in black are not as maintained.

If canoeing is not your thing but you still want to enjoy the beauty of the park, there are three hiking trails with loops ranging from six to eighty-eight kilometers long. If you are new to interior camping, keep in mind that there are no outhouses or portable toilets in the interior of the park. What the campsites do have are wooden boxes known as a thunder-box, so at least there is a place to sit. All campsites also have a fire pit.

There are several old ranger cabins in the park as well. These are quite popular during the summer months. If not staying at a cabin, then your shelter will consist of the tent you bring in yourself. If traveling a number of portages, keep in mind that you have to carry all your gear, thus it is best to pack light. There are Internet sites that provide a list of the basic supplies that campers should bring if interior camping.

It is a wise choice to bring proper bad-weather gear; nothing spoils a trip more than being wet and cold. An excellent item to bring is a dry bag, available at most outdoor suppliers. Stuff the bag with extra clothes and if you have a large enough bag, stuff your sleeping bag into it as well. A wet sleeping bag makes for a miserable night. Many experienced interior campers have several dry bags to keep all their belongings dry. Just remember to make sure it is sealed tight so no moisture can get in.

Algonquin Park is an enormous park, but also a very popular park. If you can, it is best to enter the park from the north, as it is not as busy as the rest of the park. Many interior campers start their canoeing adventures in Algonquin and then move on to less occupied and more difficult routes. An Algonquin trip is sure to create many wonderful memories for the novice and the experienced canoeist alike.

Your Outdoor Camping Equipment – Tips To Take Care Of It

While buying camping equipment, don’t squeeze on costs. You might land up with a nasty surprise during your camp. Some of the things that can happen, is that there might not be enough space, or if it is raining, rain is coming in, or at night the moisture on the floors seeps in and makes every one uncomfortable. The pleasure of camping out erased by such small things. Therefore focus on getting a relatively more expensive one, and instead of planning for just 4, plan for a 5 seater. Always buy one with more room than is necessary at the moment.

One of the worst parts of returning from a trip is to clean the equipment that was used. Clothes, shoes, cutlery, kitchen aids, camping tarpaulins, pegs, zips, the air sleeping bags, the boots, the stores you took with you and so on.

It is tough on everyone, but there is no other way, except to take care: remember always that the equipment you have bought is expensive, and even more expensive to buy a substitute.

So get to it, and start putting things back in order.

After you return from your camping trip, make sure that you layout the camping out in the sun for some time; if there are some dirty areas, clean them with a good soft detergent, and put them out to dry. Otherwise, the equipment will stink, and rot will set in. And that would put paid to your expensive equipment.

Check the sleeping bags, and after them inside out, leave them out in the sun for them to dry quickly. Check the holding ropes of the tent. Replace those require replacement. Don’t scringe on small expenses in replacing them.

If the floor sheet is not in good shape, clean it properly and lay it out to dry completely.

Check out all the equiment: portable stove, grill, cutlery and crockery. Even your sleeping bags. Clean each one of them thoroughly and then pack them in proper cartons.

Wash clean and after drying them, put away those extra equipment such as hiking boots and other survival equipment.

By following the above steps you would be able to maintain your expensive camping equipment in good condition for a long time. Otherwise, your investment will go down the drain.

The next time you go out again you will thank yourself that you did the maintenance that was required by cleaning, drying, and keeping your camping equipment in good order. No seepages, no wet grounds, stoves in good working order, clean and good looking hiking boots that don’t require attention will be the bonuses for you.

The better look after the equipment, the more it will last.

Canoeing in the Wind

The wind is blowing spray into your face. Doesn’t sound too bad, except you are in the stern and your partner in the bow is scowling. If this is your significant other, you are in big trouble. Whitecaps are breaking over his/her lap and running down her rain suit. It’s not going be a good day. A look at the wind forecast could have saved your day.

The most obvious reason to check the wind is to make it back to camp dry. Many people are unaware that crossing a large, windy lake is often much more dangerous than running evil-looking rapids. A good rule is never to go more than 300 yards from shore if you can possibly avoid it. This distance not only allows you a fighting chance of swimming to shore in case of an upset, but also allows you to quickly go to shore if weather conditions change for the worse. A large lake can go from a glassy calm to a crazed froth in 20 minutes.

Getting to know the wind is a must when you contemplate pond or lake canoeing. What may look like a mild breeze in the cove when leaving may turn into a gale wind later in the morning or afternoon. Knowing how to read the wind and clouds makes a day of paddling much more enjoyable.

Ponds and lakes are generally set in a valley, whether a few acres or many miles. These valleys have a prevailing wind as well as swirling and cross winds. These are caused by the formation of the valley and the terrain around it. First you need to know the prevailing wind. This can be determined by checking the local weather. Knowing where the wind is expected to come from is a must for anyone taking a canoe trip.

The next step is to get a map of the surrounding area. The best maps to use are topographical maps, as these show the terrain features and how they may affect the wind. Look for ridges and gaps leading into the valley in which the pond or lake is located. When you put the wind direction and surrounding terrain features together you can make a pretty good guess as to how the wind is going to affect the water on that day.

Let us say the prevailing wind is out of the North. If there is a ridge on this side of the pond it will tend to lift the wind over this part of the pond. The wind will drop back down on the pond farther toward the southern end, causing waves to build up between there and the other side of the pond. But where there is a ridge there is almost always a cut or valley. This is where the winds that catch you by surprise will come from. A gust out of a cut can turn the water into a frothing mess leaving you surprised and wet. If there is a ridge on the other end it will back up some of the wind causing rougher water.

If on the other hand the ridge is on the other end of the pond and you have a valley at the end you start from the reverse will happen. The wind will flow straight down the pond until it hits the ridge. There it will flow up and over the lay of the land. This leads to high waves and possibly white caps.

Clouds will also affect the wind. At this point let’s assume we all know light wispy clouds mean a fairly nice day, whereas dark heavy clouds mean bad weather is on the way. Clouds have an effect on the wind also. Light clouds will let the wind stay high in the atmosphere affecting the waters surface less. Dark, heavy clouds, on the other hand, are denser and will keep the wind low creating more turbulence on the water’s surface. A look at the sky can give you an idea of what kind of winds to expect. Even a brisk wind will skip over the surface of the pond if it is a cloudless day, though a 5-10 MPH wind will whip up a pond if the clouds are keeping it on the surface.

Unless you wake up to a windy day the first few hours of the day are the best to canoe. Get out on the water and enjoy yourself with some leisurely paddling and sightseeing. This is the best time to head over to the other side of the pond if that is your destination. By mid to late morning the wind will invariably pick up, so you want to be where the wind will be at your back or quartering from your back when heading back to camp. This will make the trip smoother and a lot more enjoyable.

Wind waves are built by three factors: wind strength, time blowing, and distance blowing over open water (fetch).  You can’t affect the first two, but paddlers seek to minimize fetch. If the waves get too high lower your center of gravity in the canoe. All in the canoe can drop to their knees and continue paddling.  If you’re still concerned, you can always sit on the bottom and slowly paddle to a nearby shore.

You can also use natural wind breaks to your advantage. Most obvious is a lee shore or the lee of an island.  Even up to two miles away, waves will be less ferocious. You might need to adjust your route a bit, but it will be worth it

The best way to keep from getting wet is to hug the shoreline. You want to keep a hundred feet or so from the shore to avoid hidden dangers. Large rocks and dead trees will hide just below the surface near shore and the wind could push you into these areas if you are too close. Also if you capsize and are close to shore you can get on top of your canoe and push it to shore. Remember to keep your life jacket on and watch the wind for an enjoyable day on the water.

Ultralight Backpacking Tips for Lightweight Campers

When it comes to packing all your gear ready for a backpacking trip it can be very easy to over pack. Over packing leads to a heavy load that could mean the difference between a good enjoyable trip, and one that you remember for all the wrong reasons. So learning a few ultralight backpacking tips to help you pack light can be very useful.

The first thing of course is to ditch anything that is not really essential. Try to think if you can do without an item and if so leave it behind. Next try to consider items that can be used for more than one task. This can be quite easy if you give it some thought. (For instance do you need to take a plate or will the lid of your cooking pot do the job)?

A few other things that can have more than one use are things such as candles; these can do more than just provide you with light. You can use a candle to help start a fire, and they can also work as a great waterproofing agent. Compared to a lantern or lamp that has the extra weight of the batteries a candle weighs next to nothing.

Parachute cord is a very useful piece of equipment and should always be included in your pack. It can be used for many different tasks, from using it as a clothes line, using it for emergency boot laces, tying awkward shaped items to your pack, or using as guy lines for your tent or tarp.

Do you really need to take a complete set of cutlery? There are many items on the market such as a spork, which combines a spoon at one end and a fork at the other, and if you carry a small pocket knife, then this is really all you need. Buy lightweight Titanium cookware as apposed to heavy stainless steel pots and pans.

If you know that you will have access to a good supply of water on your chosen route, Then you can save weight on your food by taking a good quantity of dehydrated ready meals, instead of lots of heavy canned goods. Also take crackers instead of bread, not only are they lighter but they don’t go stale as quick as bread will do.

These are just a few ideas of how to cut down the weight and go ultralight backpacking I am sure that when you think things through you will be able to come up with many more ideas to enable you to become a lightweight camper.

What is the fire-proof fabric that is used on army tents where the stove pipe goes through the roof?

I’m building my own wall tent and can’t seem to find the fire-proof fabric that lines the hole for the stove pipe. I know it isn’t asbestos. What is the fabric called, and where could I get some?

Iv’e slept in those types of tents with the diesel burning stoves in them. I literally slept with a fire extinguisher cradled in my arms. They might be flame retardant but they sure as hell are not fire proof. Also, I think the fabric is just regular canvass that is treated with a flame retardant chemical because they smell horrible.
